Fire Chiefs today need to evolve their thinking as it pertains to firefighter accountability. In the past, firefighter accountability was a singular focus; it kept track of firefighters on the fire ground. But that particular focus fails to address too many risks that can occur outside of incident operations.
While AVL is a giant leap forward for agencies that didn't utilize it previously, it is not the final answer, and we need to be cautious with its use.
